The Priestess - Tarot Thoth

Insight and intuition can suggest new solutions to old problems. This is a period of gestation, when changes are beginning to take place on the inner planes, but not yet manifesting in the physical. There may be hidden influences in the individual’s nature that are affecting circumstances; mysteries and secrets. Therefore, although things will turn out alright, they will probably materialize much differently than imagined. Can also indicate intuitive abilities such as clairvoyance, telepathy, and healing. The Priestess also symbolizes a woman’s influence on a situation, and can also represent a platonic relationship, one that is based on the higher principles.

The Major Arcana or trumps are a suit of twenty-two cards in the tarot deck.
The first, called 0 is the Fool.
The focus of this Tarot card is happiness, faith, trust, and contentment. It represents new beginnings. There is confidence in the action being undertaken; energy and optimism. Circumstances and events may arise which are totally unexpected, possibly leading to the start of an entirely new life or thought style. There are important decisions to be made with the appearance of this card. Depending upon the surrounding cards, it can represent a birth. The Fool often represents one just starting out on the Seeker’s Path.

The origin of this pack of cards is very obscure. Some authorities seek to put it back as far as the ancient Egyptian Mysteries; others try to bring it forward as late as the fifteenth or even the sixteenth century. But the Tarot certainly existed, in what may be called the classical form, as early as the fourteenth century; for packs of that date are extant, and the form has not varied in any notable respect since that time. In the Middle Ages, these cards were much used for fortune telling, especially by gypsies, so that it was customary to speak of the “Tarot of the Bohemians”, or “Egyptians”. When it was found that the gypsies, despite the etymology, were of Asiatic origin, some people tried to find its source in Indian art and literature. There is here no need to enter into any discussion of these disputed points. [It is supposed by some scholars that the R.O.T.A. (Rota, a wheel) consulted in the Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum--see the Manifesto "Fama Fraternitatis" of the Brothers of the Rosy Cross--was the Tarot.]

THE TAROT is a pack of seventy-eight cards. There are four suits, as in modern playing cards, which are derived from it. But the Court cards number four instead of three. In addition, there are twenty-two cards called “Trumps”, each of which is a symbolic picture with a title itself. At first sight one would suppose this arrangement to be arbitrary, but it is not. It is necessitated, as will appear later, by the structure of the universe, and in particular of the Solar System, as symbolized by the Holy Qabalah. This will be explained in due course.

crowley-back-tarot-deck

The powerful Thoth Tarot deck was designed by the legendary magician Aleister Crowley, an influencial and controversial occultist of the early 20th century. He worked on the deck from 1938 to 1943.

This deck was created to illustrate Crowley’s The Book of Thoth.  The artist is Lady Frieda Harris. She worked with Crowley’s rough sketches to produce images that would be faithful to his interpretations and her own vision. There are two versions of the Thoth deck. The cards pictured to either side are from the version published by U. S. Games with green borders and more muted colors. A second version known as the Swiss Thoth is published by AGMuller. It has grey borders and is pocket-sized. A special edition of the Swiss Thoth is available from U. S. Games. This deck contains three versions of the Magus (Magician) card.

Here the door of the site where this masterpiece was created in London:
